PIERI BUTI PALACE - MUNICIPAL LIBRARY
THE HISTORY
The building, now home to the Municipal Library, dates back to the 16th century and is attributed by some to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, by others to Vignola, although these imaginative attributions remain unsupported by any historical documentation. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the building belonged to the Pieri family, a family that later combined its surname with that of the Buti family. Francesco Maria had previously distinguished himself among the members of the Pieri family, author of The transciminal situation of the ancient Falisci and their metropolis Falerio, a historical study on the Faliscan civilization not devoid of imaginative suggestions, published posthumously in 1788. Luigi Pieri also deserves special mention. Buti, author of a History of Montefiascone, a work which, despite the evident historical limitations and documentary shortcomings, still constitutes the most organic history of the city.
DESCRIPTION
The façade of Palazzo Pieri is extremely simple, the ground floor is dominated by a massive entrance, while the main floor is marked by simple windows surmounted by protruding shelves. It is made up of six reading rooms; a newspaper library equipped with periodicals and magazines, the local section, multimedia stations, a large conference room, the Historical Archive, which has pre-unitary and post-unitary material, and finally an underground room used for exhibitions and reviews of ‘art. The library has several sections, of which the most important are the one concerning art and the local section, it promotes the cultural event “Primavera in Etruria” and the “Reading Project”, an annual meeting for compulsory school students with the aim of promoting the reading of fantastic tales. The services it offers, in addition to the various ordinary consultations and loans, are in line with the library system of Lake Bolsena, of which the Montefiascone library is part.
