THE GRASSY GARDEN
HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
The garden was created after the construction of the Aquaduct of Cimino, which took place in 1898. The Garden originally had a central fountain, but this was removed in 1922 to make space for a War Memorial. This bronze memorial is entitled Viva l’Italia (Long live Italy), and is the work of the sculptor Uno Gera of Ripatransone. Just beyond the War Memorial is a plaque, placed there on June 9th, 1968 to commemorate the soldiers of the 22nd Battalion of the Grenadiers of Sardinia who fought as a part of the campaign in Russia which started in April of 1942 from Montefiascone. At the bottom of the garden there is a small courtyard with a central fountain. From here you can see a breathtaking view of the territory of Montefiascone. Until a few years ago, the garden hosted the wine fair, which has since been transferred directly into the historic center of the city.
